In late December, 2012 a Christmas present arrived for all Classy anime fans in the form of a five minute OVA: Angelic White Magical Girls. In five minutes we are treated to a setup, a story, an action scene, and a cliffhanger. While the ability to tell a story in such a short time is a feat in itself, it is the story told that is interesting. This is a story of exposure.
When we are in public, be it at school or merely walking down the street, we all put on a front of civility. This is both for the sake of society, and for the sake of ourselves. One of the more frightening experiences in one’s life is the first time this protective barrier is lowered to a new person.
And so on.
In Angelic White Magical Girls we are shown via flashback that our four heroines, Erika, Kotone, Misa, and Yui, have all had their secrets exposed to our hero, Asai. You see, they are magical girls. They react in vastly different ways to this experience, ranging from shy to motherly. He is now a confidant, but also a potential lover, and also an aggressor. A pervert.
And what of these magical girls? They transform because they must. This is their world when our world isn’t watching. On screen they bare their skin, but in essence it is their innocence and humanity we are watching.
Asai is watching as well.
The girls realize this, but they press on. Their fight is both personal and societal. The demons that haunt them are problems that society overlooks, thus they must shoulder the burden. To achieve success they must set aside expectations and be themselves. They must bare all. And so they do.
Angelic White Magical Girls is a short OVA based on the doujinshi Mahou Shoujo by Riata. Both works contain adult content. The doujin has not been reviewed. The OVA is considered highly Classy and is recommended.
